The quest for the Microcosm Trace Rifle is called Convalescence: Budding and is not unlocked from the start of The Final Shape campaign. The mission will be given to players late in the game’s campaign and requires doing several missions.
The process starts by beating the Iconoclasm mission in the campaign. This will open up the Pale Heart as a patrol area and will give the player a few different objectives to complete. The game nudges you to start the Destined Heroes quest for the Ergo Sum Exotic sword, but players only need to complete the Queens, Part 1 step to get to the Microcosm quest.
Players will then need to complete three missions to receive the Microcosm quest:
Micah-10 in the Lost City will give players the Microcosm quest after completing the last mission of the list. However, the next part can be troublesome if not fully prepared.

The Convalescence: Budding quest has players replaying three missions from The Final Shape with added modifiers called Focus Cooperative. The missions are Ascent, Dissent, and Iconoclasm.
The three Focus Cooperative missions can be found on the Pale Heart map under the Replayable Missions banner. These missions start at 2005 Power and require a pre-made team with no matchmaking offered.
They each contain three gameplay modifiers that require communication with your team. The first feature is a different version of Glyphtouched, where only one player can walk through the glowing symbols. However, the player cannot see the symbols while the other two can and have to direct.
The second feature are Berserkers who are enemies with weak points on the front and back that must be hit at the same time. Two Darkness Cruxs will then appear and the team must shoot both at the same time as well.
The last feature is the Fracture debuff, which will continually infect players on your team. The player affected will not be able to use abilities once the debuff stacks to seven, but another player can interact with the affected player after that and take the debuff themselves. Players will be switching the Fracture debuff amongst themselves until the objective is completed, or it stacks to 10 and kills the entire team.
Once all three Focus Cooperative missions are done, return to Micah-10 who will then give you the Microcosm Exotic Trace Rifle at an appropriate Power level.
