How to Climb Ice Walls in Tears of the Kingdom

Slippin' and slidin'

One of Tears of the Kingdom’s greatest features is that you can solve problems in many different ways. One puzzle can have multiple solutions, including some that very few people have considered. You can play the game however you’d like, and traversing the land is no exception.

One of the most challenging things in TOTK, especially in the early game, is navigating icy biomes, especially as you make your way to places like Gutanbac Shrine. How to Climb Ice Walls and Cliffs in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (TOTK)

Fortunately, TOTK allows you several different ways to navigate slippery slopes and icy surfaces, with the list below including a few examples:

  • Use Ultrahand to make a log bridge, ladder, or other structure for climbing
  • Equip and use the Froggy Gear Set
  • Use a Sticky Elixir

Your method will depend on how far you are in the game and your patience. Nonetheless, let’s talk about each one.

How to Make a Log Bridge in Tears of the Kingdom

Creating a log bridge to go up large ice walls is an interesting process. Using the southeastern part of Great Sky Island as an example, you can chop down logs and use Ultrahand to make a makeshift bridge, allowing you to carry it along on your journey. Just make sure you pick up a stone axe to get some wood! I found two at around coordinates (0588, -1334, 1440), but you’re welcome to use any others you find along the way.

Once you get your hands on the stone axe, you can start chopping down trees and attaching them using Ultrahand. After fusing the logs, you can place them against the icy cliffside, allowing you to cross without sliding around the wall.

Below is an example of one I made while attempting to go to Gutanbac Shrine. It isn’t pretty, and it’s barely functional, but hey, at least I got across!

Obtaining the Froggy Gear Set in Tears of the Kingdom

Froggy Gear is an armor set you can equip that increases your slip resistance, allowing you to climb ice and rain-covered surfaces. It comes with a hood, sleeve, and leggings, giving you three pieces to equip. However, it’s a lengthy process to unlock them. I hope you like horses.

To unlock Froggy Gear, you’ll have to visit a bunch of different stables all over the map, from Wetland Stable near Tukarok Shrine to Outskirt Stable near Tsutsu-um Shrine. You’ll have to complete multiple miniquests, starting with “Potential Princess Sightings” at Lucky Clover Gazette, a newspaper shop just east of Rito Village at coordinates (-3257, 1774, 0119).

Making and Using a Sticky Elixir in Tears of the Kingdom

The last method to scaling ice and rainy walls in Tears of the Kingdom is creating a Sticky Elixir! To make this, you’ll need a sticky lizard or frog and monster parts, which you have to toss into a cooking pot to make the mixture. You may also find some elixirs in treasure chests, but it isn’t a common item. With that said, though, make sure to open as many chests as possible if you want a chance at finding some sticky elixir for your next rock climbing session.

While getting your hands on sticky lizards and frogs won’t be easy on Great Sky Island, you’ll have free rein to find them on mountain walls, cave floors and everywhere in between once you explore beyond this starting area.
