Once you gain your first set of Pokeballs and start spotting various Pokemon in the sky or trees, you’ll have to press two joycon buttons. Your ZL button allows you to aim toward the Pokemon, while your ZR button throws the Pokeball. If successful, your “lead” Pokemon, or the one in the first party slot, will initiate a battle. Try to pick a Pokemon that counters the tree one!

From here, the process is much like a regular ground battle. You’ll use your Pokemon to attack the opposing side, and if you’d like, you can catch the other Pokemon by pressing X and confirming with A. Succeeding at this will cause the tree Pokemon to join your party and allow you to use it in future battles.

While you won’t find Pokemon in every tree, it’s good to keep an eye out, especially early on when you don’t have a lot in your party. Picking some up in the first few areas until you find stronger Pokemon will help you out later. It’ll also help you fill your Pokedex since some Pokemon exclusively live in trees or fly around the map!
