How Much Friendship is “High Friendship?”

Friendship is a stat that players can’t directly see, but there is a particular value a Pokemon must reach before it can evolve. Before Sword and Shield, this was a value of 220 (out of 255) friendship. Starting with Sword and Shield, a Pokemon needs only 160 (out of 255) friendship to evolve.

How to Check Friendship in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

In Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, players can speak to the woman near the large fountain in Cascarrafa to learn how much friendship their Pokemon has… kind of. She, like previous games’ “friendship checkers,” doesn’t reveal a Pokemon’s exact friendship stat. Instead, she gives a general statement based on different ranges of Pokemon friendship values. The following table lists her different statements and their corresponding value ranges.

If your Pokemon has the required 160 friendship, she will say “You’re getting along well…but I’m sure you could get way friendlier!” Unfortunately, she will also say the same statement if the Pokemon has anywhere from 130 to 159 friendship, meaning it isn’t guaranteed that your Pokemon will evolve when they’re at this range. If the friendship checker says “You’re good friends, all right! You definitely enjoy each other’s company!” or anything after that, your Pokemon is guaranteed to evolve once you level it up, as long as you meet any other requirements it may have, such as leveling it up during a certain time of the day.

Ways to Raise Friendship in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

In Scarlet and Violet, different actions raise a Pokemon’s friendship by different amounts based on how much friendship it currently has. A Pokemon with 99 or less friendship will gain friendship faster, then slow down as it reaches 100 through 159 points. Once a Pokemon reaches 160 points of friendship and is ready to evolve, it can only gain more friendship through picnic activities and by giving it EV reducing berries. A Pokemon can always lose friendship points by fainting or being fed bitter medicine. The following table goes over all the different activities that can alter a Pokemon’s friendship, and by how many points.

There are ways to speed up friendship gain, including:

• If you catch a Pokemon in a Luxury Ball, any action that raises its friendship will raise it by an extra point.
• If a Pokemon is holding the Soothe Bell item, all increases to its friendship will be increased by 50% (after factoring bonuses such as if it’s in a Luxury Ball).
• Any action that raises friendship will be raised by an additional point if it is done in the Pokemon’s “met location,” the location listed in its status screen as the place where it was first met.

There’s also one extra way to increase friendship quickly in Scarlet and Violet: if you catch a Pokemon in a Friend Ball, the Pokemon’s friendship value will be set to 150. This means you only need to wash it once in a picnic (or make a sandwich with it) and the Pokemon will be ready to evolve. Friend Balls are very rare in Scarlet and Violet, although you can get them randomly through the Item Printer in The Indigo Disk.
