When you’ve started creating your character, you’ll want to access the main menu that the game has to offer and make sure that you turn off FSR or any other graphics upscaling software that the game is using, such as DLSS.

  • Display Settings
  • Find Upscaling
  • Select Off from this menu

Try to proceed with the character creation. If you’re able to get through, then you’re ready to jump back in. You can turn on your Upscaling once again and get those performance boosts that you may need for this game to run. If this didn’t fix it for you, there are a few other options we can try.

Try rebooting your PC. This sounds incredibly simple, but this could be the main issue that you’ve been running into all along. Once your PC starts back up, make sure that you’ve updated all of your Drivers, especially those for your graphics cards. There could be incompatible software hindering your progress in this newly released space epic.

The final and most nuclear option is uninstalling and reinstalling the game. Some of the files may have been corrupted during the installation, so going this route may fix your character creator bug. If you’re playing on Steam, verifying the game files could also solve this issue rather than uninstalling the game.

While it may not be ideal, waiting for a hotfix may be the only solution that fixes this. While Starfield did receive a large day-one patch, there may be a few small bugs and issues that persist until the game officially releases on September 6, 2023. Once you do get past the character creator, which may be harder to do than recruiting some of your allies, be sure to check out our Starfield section below to get yourself ready for an epic space adventure.
