What is 3-Genning in Dead by Daylight? – Answered

Find out what this term means in Dead by Daylight.

Dead by Daylight is a rather strategic game, especially when you decide to don the mantle of one of the many Killers available to you within the game. However, there is one particular trick that can be headache-inducing, so let’s learn about 3-Genning.

What Does Being 3 Genned Mean in Dead by Daylight?

If you’re playing as a Survivor, getting 3-Genned is one of the worst things that could happen to you. However, if you’re playing as a Killer, getting a 3-Gen is exactly what you want. While the upcoming changes in the PTB may make 3-Genning a bit more difficult to accomplish, you’ll still have the upper hand to get some easy hooks.

Let’s look at this concept from the eyes of a Survivor. When you first get dropped into the Trail, you’ll need to work with your team to complete a total of five Generators out of the seven that are available on the map. While the Killer has special vision to see where all of these generators are hiding, you’ll need to work with a group of players to complete Generators and try to escape. If you’ve completed all of the generators on one side of the map, however, things will get much more complicated near the endgame.

Getting 3-Genned means that you’ve completed all of the generators on one side of the playing field, making it very easy for the Killer to defend the remaining 3 generators that are all on the same side. They’ll be able to move quickly between all of the Generators on the field, making it nearly impossible to make significant progress on the Gen that you’re working on without any interruption. Certain Killers, with Skull Merchant coming to mind first, were notorious for how they could elongate a game with their powers when it came to a 3-Gen situation, but it appears that the team at Behaviour is working on tweaks to make 3-Genning less cumbersome.

Rather than partaking in Chases, the Killer will likely continue to monitor these Generators to see if any progress is being made on them, making the match drag on for much longer than expected. Survivors may choose to hide in lockers or make their way to other parts of the map to see if they can frustrate the Killer enough to the point where they’ll disconnect, but it’s just no fun for anyone involved. You can either sacrifice yourself and try to do work on the Gens if your team is hiding out, or you can just keep searching if you’re in the shoes of the Killer and hope that you’re lucky enough to get an extra sacrifice if someone slips up.

According to the January Developer Update, players can expect to see these changes being made to make 3-Genning less of a death sentence:

  • Going forward, each Generator can only suffer from a maximum of eight ‘regression events’ – where a regression event is any time the Killer or their Perks removes at least 2.5% of the Generator’s progress in an instant. An indicator will show the Killer if a Generator can no longer be damaged. In the overwhelming majority of games, this will not come into play. However, in scenarios where the Killer is defending a set of Generators and refusing to chase Survivors, there will eventually come a point where they can no longer damage the Generator, helping bring an end to excessively long matches.

There is more information regarding the changes being made to 3-Genning and Gen Tapping in the Developer Update, so make sure that you’re taking a look to see what major changes are coming to the game when the next big update drops. However, this does seem to be a positive change, as it will require players to continue chasing, and for Survivors to use their skills and instincts to make it out alive.
