Pokemon Indigo Disk: How to Evolve Alolan Vulpix in Scarlet & Violet

The best version hands-down

Alolan Vulpix is finally available in the wild in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet! The snowy vulpine Pokemon is one of the many additions in the Indigo Disk DLC for the game which brought a lot of newcomers to our team without needing Pokemon HOME, and here’s how you can evolve it.

How to Evolve Alolan Vulpix in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet’s Indigo Disk

Alolan Vulpix evolves into Alolan Ninetales by exposing it to an Ice Stone in the Indigo Disk. This is a direct parallel to the Kantonian version, which also evolves when exposed to a Fire Stone. There is no level requirement for using an Ice Stone, so you could even evolve Vulpix at Level 1 if you wanted.

But the best choice is to wait for Vulpix to learn a few moves before doing so, as Ninetales doesn’t learn any moves by leveling. But don’t worry if you pulled the evolution trigger and used the Ice Stone too early. Ninetales can still remember moves like Blizzard even if you evolved it before it could learn it. It will also automatically learn Dazzling Gleam upon evolving, one of its best offensive options.

Where to Get an Ice Stone in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet’s Indigo Disk

Ice Stones can only be found by picking them up from the ground in icy areas. This is one of the few items you can’t buy anywhere, so your best option is to visit icy locations such as the Polar Biome in the Terarium or the Glaseado Mountain in Paldea, next to Grusha and Ryme’s gyms. They show up as shiny spots on the ground.

Personally, Glaseado worked way better for me to find them as it took quite a while for me to find an Ice Stone in Terarium. They seemed to be all around the mountain corner in Paldea, so I’d recommend you to head there if you need some extras.

You can also potentially get an Ice Stone in the Indigo Disk, among other evolution items, as a random drop from the Item Printer. If you don’t yet have access to the Item Printer, you can get it by donating 200 BP to the Science Club in the League Club Room. Once you have the Item Printer, you can then drop any of your unwanted Pokemon materials into the printer to have it print out a random assortment of items, including the Ice Stone which has a 0.5% chance of printing. It seems like quite a rare drop, but if you’re doing the max 10 prints at a time, the Ice Stone will print more often than you might expect.

Also, remember that Alolan Vulpix is a Scarlet version exclusive and Violet players will instead find Alolan Sandshrew. But you can always trade to get the one you can’t find, and it’s the only way to truly finish the Pokedex.

What Other Pokemon Evolve By Using an Ice Stone in Indigo Disk?

Alolan Vulpix isn’t the only Pokemon that evolves when using an Ice Stone. Here are all the other Pokemon that will evolve when exposed to an Ice Stone as well in The Indigo Disk:

  • Alolan Sandshrew evolves into Alolan Sandslash (exclusive to Pokemon Violet).
  • Eevee evolves into Glaceon.
  • Crabrawler evolves into Crabominable.
  • Cetoddle evolves into Cetitan.

It’s a small list, but those are all the uses of the Ice Stone. Next up, you may want to check out how to get a Leaf Stone—after all, Gloom isn’t going to evolve itself in The Indigo Disk.
