Every weapon in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has its own Weapon Proficiency that you can increase to permanently learn new moves. Seeing the progress can get confusing, though, and I’m here to get you on the right track.
How to See Your Weapon Proficiency in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
Any weapon abilities that have a yellow checkmark in the equipment menu indicate that you reached full Weapon Proficiency. Each weapon in the game has an ability info screen on the right that you can view within the same equipment menu. Directly under the name will be a bar that indicates how much progress in the proficiency you have so far. So if you’re viewing the Buster Sword on Cloud, look for a blue bar.
Once you fill the blue bar to the end, you will get a yellow checkmark symbol that means you can start using the ability on any of Cloud’s weapons. And if you haven’t seen this screen at all, just open up the Main Menu and choose the “Materia & Equipment” option. From there, pick any party member and open the weapons menu. All of your Weapon Proficiency progress can be found in this one spot.
How to Gain Weapon Proficiency in FF7 Rebirth
To increase Weapon Proficiency, you need to have the specific weapon equipped and use the respective weapon skill it teaches in combat. You can earn even more proficiency if you satisfy the Proficiency Bonus criteria listed on the weapon details.
For example, Cloud’s Buster Sword teaches the Focused Thrust ability. Using Focused Thrust normally will earn you proficiency, but using Focused Thrust to stagger an enemy will net you considerably more points.
Only the weapon that is currently in use for a party member can earn any progress, so I recommend sticking with one option until you earn that yellow checkmark. If you move ahead to new weapons too fast, you certainly won’t want to turn back and earn those old abilities. Start collecting them all while you can.
Don’t forget to look for Materia along the way to make each of your abilities even more powerful.
