For seven-star raids, you’ll need to do EV and IV training to build a powerhouse of a Pokemon, which can be annoying if you mess it up. Here is how to reset EVs in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.
What Are Pokemon EVs?
If you’re not familiar with EVs in Pokemon, you may first be wondering just what they are. In short, Pokemon EVs (short for effort values) are a hidden mechanic that dictate a given Pokemon’s stats.
Whenever your Pokemon defeats another Pokemon, they’re awarded a small number of EV points that go toward a specific stat, dictated by the species of the defeated Pokemon. For example, if your Pokemon defeats a Buizel, they will get one Speed EV. Defeating four Buizels will increase your Pokemon’s Speed stat by one.
Most Pokemon give between one and three EVs as long as they also award experience (a Pokemon defeated in a Battle Tower, for example, will not award EVs). The amount of EVs a Pokemon can earn is capped out at 510, with 252 required to maximize a stat.
This means you can gain a maximum of 63 additional points for a stat just by defeating certain Pokemon.
EV-trained Pokemon are almost always going to be stronger than any wild Pokemon of the same level. Two Pokemon can have the same exact Speed stat, for example, but if one Pokemon has higher EVs in Speed, then it will always be faster than the other. Competitive trainers take advantage of this mechanic to be the very best, like no one ever was.
What Are Pokemon IVs?
Pokemon IVs (short for individual values) is another hidden mechanic influencing your Pokemon’s stats, but they are not to be confused with a Pokemon’s EVs.
Each of your Pokemon’s six stats has a corresponding IV attached to it, which ranges in value from 0-31. IVs are responsible for the variation in stats among Pokemon of the same species. So, for example, a Squirtle with 0 IV points in Speed is going to be significantly slower than a Squirtle with 31 IV points in Speed.
For the most part, IVs are fixed. When you come across a Pokemon in the wild, it will have predetermined IVs that you will not be able to change. This is why you’ll see competitive players breeding for the right Pokemon rather than trying to catch one organically. However, in the later stages of the game you will get access to Hyper Training and Bottle Caps. Both are methods to get your Pokemon’s IVs to 31.
Generally speaking, EVs are a little more important to a trainer than IVs, as EVs are what will grow as you nurture a Pokemon. EVs also hold more influence over stats, being able to increase a Pokemon’s stat by 63 points. IVs can only increase a stat by up to 31 points.
How to Reset EVs in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet
If you’re training a Pokemon and you realize that the EVs it has been naturally gaining aren’t going where you want them to, then you may want to undo that progress. After all, you can only earn up to 510 EVs per Pokemon, which means you will eventually cap out.
And if you have a favorite Pokemon or a shiny one you want to ensure is at the top of their game, you will need to reallocate those EVs to the correct place.
To reset a Pokemon’s EVs in Scarlet and Violet, you’ll need to use berries. Certain berries will reduce a Pokemon’s EVs but only by a set amount. So while it will take quite a few berries to reset all of a Pokemon’s effort values completely, it is possible.
Below you can find each berry and the associated stat it reduces.
Berry | Stat Reduced | Amount of Points Reduced |
---|---|---|
Kelpsy | Attack | 10 |
Qualot | Defense | 10 |
Pomeg | HP | 10 |
Hondew | Special Attack | 10 |
Grepa | Special Defense | 10 |
Tamato | Speed | 10 |
Each berry will reduce the specific Pokemon’s corresponding stat EVs by 10 points. Meaning you’ll need roughly 20 to fully reduce a maxed-out stat.
You’ll find these stat-reducing berries in four places: The Porto Marinada Auction House, Emotional Spectrum Practice, Tera Raids, and Ogre Oustin’. Of those four, the Porto Marinada auctions are going to be your best bet.
Getting Berries at the Porto Marinada Auction House
The auctions will become available after completing the Cascarrafa Gym challenge, and then all you have to do is simply outbid the NPCs.
Keep in mind, the items up for auction change every in-game day (roughly 72 minutes real time), so you may have to wait before you can pick up the berry you want. Although, if you’re particularly impatient, you can always change your Nintendo Switch’s internal clock to change the items faster.
Getting Berries From 5-Star Tera Raids
If you don’t want to wait on auctions, you can try farming berries from 5-Star Tera Raids or the Emotional Spectrum Practice, which will both give out the berries randomly as rewards. To unlock 5-Star Tera Raids, you’ll have to first beat the game by completing all three of the major storylines: Victory Road, Path of Legends, and Starfall Street.
Getting Berries From Emotional Spectrum Practice
The Emotional Spectrum Practice, which is a minigame like Simon Says, will become available as part of the Alfornada Gym’s challenge. After you defeat Gym Leader Tulip, you’ll be able to replay the Emotional Spectrum Practice as many times as you’d like.
Getting Berries From Ogre Oustin’
You can also get berries by playing the new minigame Ogre Oustin’, which came in the new Teal Mask DLC. You’ll be able to earn these berries by playing either 3, 6, or 10 rounds, depending on the difficulty chosen. After you are given the one-time reward for the appropriate difficulty level, you’ll earn other repeating rewards on each consecutive run, including Mochi berries.
Fresh-Start Mochi
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s The Teal Mask DLC introduced a new item called the Fresh-Start Mochi which will completely reset all of your Pokemon’s EVs. You can get the Fresh-Start Mochi as a random reward for completing a round of the Ogre Oustin’ minigame in Kitakami. If you’re trying to reset all of your Pokemon’s EVs back to zero and restart from the ground-up, this will be your most efficient and quickest option.
