How to Get The Detonator Handle in Amnesia: The Bunker

You just know we're gonna Wile E. Coyote this, right?

As you might be aware, in order to escape in Amnesia: The Bunker, you need to blow up the exit. Getting the Detonator Handle is an obvious step toward that goal, and the story is about to come to a close, so let me show you how to get the Detonator handle in Amnesia: The Bunker the easiest way.

Where to Find The Detonator Handle in Amnesia: The Bunker

Before we proceed, make sure that you have the Chain Cutters (luckily, we have a guide on how to get the Chain Cutters ready). Now, we should take you to the notorious Roman Tunnels, which is a very, very important location, and also, a very, VERY scary location, especially when you are going in there for the first time. Make sure to familiarize yourself with the fully revealed map of Amnesia: The Bunker, because we’ll need that knowledge passed on to you to help you navigate to this location better.

How to Get to The Roman Tunnels in Amnesia: The Bunker

In short: as you leave the generator room, take the right door out of the Administrator’s Office, turn left, and proceed forward. It’s also important to have at least three inventory spaces free. The items that are crucial for this mission are:

  • Revolver (maybe a Grenade, if you have an abundance of them, for the purposes of breaking the door)
  • Chain Cutters
  • Bandages or First Aid (if you feel you’ll be wounded)
  • Flashlight (optional, makes life less stressful)

There will be a lot of important items in the Roman Tunnels and you will find more useful stuff along the way, so do not be surprised if you make multiple runs to that location.

You will need to crawl under an obstacle (seen in the image at the top of this article) and you will be then met by the chains that lock the door that’s keeping you away from the Roman Tunnels. I have made a couple of screenshots for you that will make this process easy for you:

Basically, just follow the red arrow. After you finish crawling under the obstacle, snap the chain (note: you can’t shoot it off, so Chain Cutters are mandatory).

How to Activate and Turn On The Water Pump in Amnesia: The Bunker

You will now need to do a little bit of swimming here. Between the two storage shelves shown in the screenshot below, there’s a box (red arrow pointing to it). You will need to pull it in so that you can swim between these shelves. After that, go and pull the switch (marked with the yellow arrow in the distance) down.

As soon as you flick that switch, swim back to the little generator which we will show in the screenshot below, and crank it up so that it drains the water. The golden/yellow switch is visible on the left side.

Now, you may proceed to the Roman Tunnels after the water has been completely drained. You will do a bit of swimming and you will spot a base right on the shore. In Easy and Normal mode (haven’t tried Hard yet, I apologize), there is a Lantern that you can use to save your progress.

After you save your progress, you can check the surroundings for some useful items and proceed forward.

Warning – major spoiler ahead:

The Beast can’t find you here. There is only one enemy on this level and you will be able to hear it and dispose of it quickly. You will be able to hear it clearly. The rest are illusions, or apparitions, if you will. You can shoot at the illusion later to get an achievement…

You will notice that it’s foggy as hell within the Roman Tunnels, but at least it’s manageable compared to the other parts of the game. After you jump down from the boards, you have officially entered the level. Keep in mind that this is your exit point, so remember where it is. You will need to drag one big box and one small box to make makeshift stairs for you to climb back up. I advise you to do it immediately. It will make it easier for you to spot the exit afterward.

l cannot stress enough how screenshots for most of the Roman Tunnel area would be useless, since it’s all foggy and you wouldn’t be able to make out anything, so we’ll go the old, text-only way, and I’ll toss in a Paint.exe map with totally accurate room proportions:

Map by Prima Games

When you drop from the ledge (marked with the letter S for start), you’ll need to turn left and as you go forward (door marked red), you’ll enter a fairly big room. If you keep moving forward you’ll end up hitting a barricade with barbed wire. From there, you should turn right and pass through the door (marked red). Feel free to explore the room for useful items before leaving.

As soon as you pass through the door, you’ll turn left and hear someone rambling some nonsense (and see the subtitles). It is possible to try and evade the conflict with this… entity (marked with E), but if you want to confront it, here’s an efficient guide on how to kill the Roman Tunnels enemy, since it yields a pretty useful item for you. The yellow marks on the map are the open hallway entries.

If you want to evade the conflict, check behind you and around you for a brick. It may spawn at a random place. Alternatively, have a grenade ready. At the big tip of the green arrow, you are met with a choice to either pass through the open door on your left into the big room with a locked door, or go forward to be met with another locked door. There’s not much difference between the two choices. You need to smash the door, or both for maneuverability purposes. In the middle of the room marked with “Detonator Handle”, you will spot the Detonator Handle:

The mysterious entity will hear you smash the door and begin to chase you. You can either try to run back the same way you came, or you can temporarily hide in the secret passage that leads to something cool and useful, located in the west section of this room (yellow mark on the map, left of the Detonator Handle).

And that’s how you finish one of the steps towards becoming Wile E. Coyote in Amnesia: The Bunker. The Detonator Handle is a crucial part, and next, we’ll show you how to get the Arsenal Door code and how to get the Dynamite to finally start the fireworks, so make sure to check that article out if you need any assistance.
