To start the Twixt a Rock and a Hard Place side quest in Dragon’s Dogma 2, you first need to talk to Akakios in Bakbattahl. You will find him to the west of the Mercantile Ward. Interact with him, and he will give you a letter that you need to deliver to Ernesto at the Volcanic Island Camp.

You will get a marker on your map for the location of Ernesto when the quest begins. It is to the south of Bakbattahl, where you have to go through Drabnir’s Grotto to get to the other side of the map. If you are in the early stages of the story, the chances are you have not unlocked this area yet. However, you will need to visit this area to unlock the Magick Archer Vocation.

If you manage to get past Drabnir’s Grotto and get to the other side, keep going east to find the Volcanic Island Camp. Here, you will find Ernesto in the camp to which you will give the letter. If you struggle to find Ernesto, then you should look into our Ernesto location guide.

Where to Find Barbas in Dragon’s Dogma 2

After you give him the letter that you got from Akakios, he will then request you to deliver it to Barbas in the Excavation Site. To get to the Excavation Site, keep going right on the map from the Volcanic Island Camp, and you will make it there.

As you enter the site from the front gate, you will see a Beastern with a black shield and armor standing in your path. He is the one to whom you need to pass the letter. Talk to him and give him Ernesto’s letter to complete the side quest. For your reward, you will receive 2500 XP, 20,000 G, and a Ferrystone.

If, for some reason, you are not able to find both of the NPCs, then you will have to revive them by going to the Battahl Morgue. This can be done using Wakestones, which you can find easily with the help of this guide.
