Sony’s Spider-Man announcement was so confusing even Sony itself was confused. When Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales was first shown during June 11’s PS5 showcase, fans went wild with their excitement and surprise at seeing a sequel so soon. Nowhere in the messaging was it clear that this was not, in fact, Spider-Man 2, which then led Sony to clarify that this is an expansion instead. Only, it’s not an expansion, which has then led to Sony’s latest clarification that it’s a standalone game.
Still with us? Yeah…
The original correction saw Sony’s head of European Business, Simon Rutter, telling The Telegraph that “I guess you could call it an expansion and an enhancement to the previous game.” This led to many outlets correcting their stories, instead going with the expansion explanation.
So why didn’t we write that? Because it conflicts with what we were told by Sony explicitly, so we did some digging. During that digging, known writer Jason Schreier made a public post after speaking with his own Sony contacts, saying “Spider-Man Miles Morales is not an expansion or enhancement or remaster, despite a Sony executive’s comments this morning, a source tells Bloomberg news. Nor is it Spider-Man 2. It’s a brand-new standalone game similar in scope to Uncharted Lost Legacy.
NEWS: Spider-Man Miles Morales is *not* an expansion or enhancement or remaster, despite a Sony executive’s comments this morning, a source tells Bloomberg News. Nor is it Spider-Man 2. It is a brand-new, standalone game similar in scope to Uncharted Lost Legacy.

This matches up to what we were told previously by our own Sony insider, something our news room was talking about yesterday during the event. It both is and isn’t a sequel, it’s a continuation meant to stand on its own legs. Though the initial announcement was riddled in confusion, the latest clarification is does fall in-line with previous reports, whereas the direct expansion talk did not.
Hopefully, that clears things up as we learn more about Miles’ upcoming trials over the coming months. In the meantime, you can check out the original reveal trailer below, as well as a few other key announcements that dropped yesterday:

- Demon Soul’s Remake Officially Announced For PS5
