To celebrate fifty years of golden arches and questionable ingredient lists, McDonald’s had a lot of stuff planned. This event in particular was to feature several streams from Australian content creators, and prizes were involved. One such prize, lord help us all, was a custom DualSense PS5 controller adorned in the style of a to-go bag. It seems like nobody actually asked for permission though, as Sony got the whole thing upended.
According to a report from Gizmodo, this 50 years of MicDonald’s stream was supposed to run for a week and start yesterday, August 1, 2021. Needless to say that didn’t happen, and the event has been postponed without a new date.
This all being the result of a Sony legal backhanding is no conjecture. In a statement sent to media outlets, representation for McDonald’s included an apology for the inconvenience (to potential viewers presumably) and an admission the custom PS5 controller wasn’t officially authorized.

The one missing part of the story, natch, is how the folks behind this event decided they didn’t need to ask for permission before waving PlayStation logos around an official, branded event. It does seem like Sony is going after stuff like this more than it did in previous console generations, to be fair.
