Gambit Receives Some Much Needed Love Ahead Of The Witch Queen Launch

A lot of changes are coming.

Ahead of Destiny 2’s newest expansion The Witch Queen, the team released the final This Week at Bungie ahead of launch. It focuses on a lot of different changes coming to the game, but noticeable are the changes to the PvEvP mode Gambit, which has needed some tweaks for quite some time.

Gambit Receives Some Much Needed Love Ahead Of The Witch Queen Launch

In the blog post, Bungie identifies five areas in which Gambit will receive changes.

  • Core Activity

  • Ammo Economy
  • Primeval Tuning
  • Invasions
  • Rewards

The Core activity changes come in the form of adding a freelance node option for Gambit, which allows solo players to queue with other solo players to avoid being stacked against a team of friends.

The rotation of enemy variation is changing as well. While Bungie notes

“Playing with the single variation for race/map for a year led us to an interesting observation: it’s FUN to know that ‘Hive on Pacifica’ means “Oh, god, those Shriekers” and to learn the spawns and master them over time.”

Now there will be more variety in the spawns of the different enemies even within the same subset.

Respawn points will also be added to all fronts to keep players engaged quickly and without having to run back to the fight every time.

Blockers and drainers have received some minor changes to help make them feel a little more powerful. For instance, a 10 mote Phalanx Blocker now has more health to make them more of a threat.

The Primeval health have been retuned to make it more difficult to burn down the final fight in one or two rounds. This change will make it more work to do as skipping an entire phase of the fight shouldn’t be the norm.

As well as some minor tweaks to the Envoys which now respawn at 30% of the boss health and put an invulnerability shield on the boss.

One of the biggest parts of Gambit is the PvP element, which of course has an invader from one team come over and try to take out the Fireteam members of the other squad.

Invaders are getting some serious reworks in Gambit. First up, the invader portal now opens up at 40 and 80 mote thresholds and can not be saved up, if you don’t use the 40 mote invasion before you hit 80, you’ll only have one invasion.

Invaders can also no longer see how many motes each player is holding, which paints less of a target on anyone carrying a ton of motes, and makes the invader have to work for it a bit more.

Finally, the rewards for playing Gambit are also getting a few changes.

Engrams can now be focused for Gambit Armor of Weapons for 10,000 Glimmer and 50 Legendary Shards.

New Gambit weapons added will be drop-only for a single season, and then post-season can be focused.

At the end of a match players will have a chance of receiving a Gambit memento for weapon crafting and older Gambit shaders have been put in the pool.

There are plenty of other changes in This Week at Bungie, but the Gambit changes are the most significant.

The Witch Queen expansion launches on February 22, 2022, and is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.
