This is a big move, as we’ve seen Netflix slowly wade into the games industry in various forms. But as Night School Studio’s press release notes, this is the first acquisition of a game studio. And if we scoot over to the Netflix side of things, we have even more interesting parts of this story.
A statement from Netflix VP of Game Development Mike Verdu was posted in the “Netflix Newsroom.” This statement gasses up Night School of course, but it also notes that Netflix games will be included with Netflix subscriptions, with no ads or even “in-app purchases.” Verdu also states, “We’ll continue working with developers around the world and hiring the best talent in the industry to deliver a great collection of exclusive games designed for every kind of gamer and any level of play.”
So it looks like not only is Netflix acquiring studios, it’s doing so to have in-house games developed exclusively for Netflix subscription holders.
