Ranking the Best Pokemon Starters

The Pokemon franchise currently has nine Generations, meaning there are 27 different starter Pokemon. While there are so many to choose from, only a few can be crowned as the best.

Here are the best Pokemon starters.

7. Treecko

First released in Gen III, Treecko became quite popular with grass-type lovers. In fact, many argue that Treecko was the last good grass-type starter Pokemon ever released. Its final evolution, Sceptile was a force not to be reckoned with.

Treecko is easily one of the best starter Pokemon ever to be in the series.

6. Piplup

Released in Gen IV, Piplup took the cake as the best starter in that Generation. While the starter may have seemed cute to many, its third and final evolution, Empoleon, was an incredibly powerful Pokemon that you needed on your team.

Piplup is hands down one of the best starter Pokemon in the series.

5. Bulbasaur

Introduced as one of the first starters in Gen I, Bulbasaur quickly became a fan favorite. Every single one of the Gen I starters are still loved by the entirety of the Pokemon community. Eventually evolving into Venusaur, this popular Pokemon had grass powers that many opponents did not want to fight against.

Not only is Bulbasaur one of the most famous Pokemon, but he is also one of the best starters.

4. Cyndaquil

Many wondered how Gen II would top Gen I. Well, with a starter such as Cyndaquil at the hands of players, it was pretty obvious that Pokemon was really upping their game. The cute porcupine fire-type Pokemon eventually evolves into Typhlosion, which is easily one of the strongest and best fire-type Pokemon in the series.

Cyndaquil will always be favored as one of the best starter Pokemon in the game.

3. Squirtle

You cannot have a list of the best starter Pokemon without including the classic Squirtle. This turtle water-type Pokemon starts out as fun and cute, but eventually turns into an absolute monster when evolved into Blastoise.

Squirle is iconic in every way, and an easy pick for number three on our list of the seven best Pokemon starters.

2. Mudkip

Mudkip is hands down one of the best starter Pokemon ever released. Its final evolution, Swampert, became one of the most powerful water-type Pokemon. Its mixture of ground-type and water-type made it strong against a plethora of different Pokemon, certifying itself as one of the best.

If you are playing Gen III, you know how vital it is to have Mudkip as your starter, making him number two on our list.

1. Charmander

An easy pick for number one on our list of the seven best Pokemon starters is Charmander. This fire-type starter eventually turns into the legendary Charizard. When the games first came out, everyone wanted to have Charizard on their team. Now, with nine Generations available, people are still looking to get ahold of a Charmander. Charmander has taken the throne as the best starter since the release of Gen I and has yet to be dethroned.
