WoW Season 3 Gear Upgrades Explained – Flightstones, Dreaming Crests, and More

Crests for the bests

Since 10.1, World of Warcraft has taken a slightly different approach to gear upgrades. Rather than being able to farm a single currency and upgrade gear indefinitely, we’ll be using “Crests” – let’s see how they work in Season 3.

WoW Season 3 Gear Upgrade Tracks

Several “tracks” gear exist in Season 3, and the idea is to keep low-level gear from reaching pinnacle item levels without attempting pinnacle content. The gear ranks, upgrade materials (and where to get these further down below), and item level ranges are as follows. Note: all upgrades require Flightstones in addition to listed Dreaming Crests.

  • Explorer: 415 – 437
    • Upgradeable all the way to rank 8 (item level 437) using only Flightstones
  • Adventurer: 428 – 450
    • Flightstones to rank 4
    • Welpling’s Dreaming Crests up to rank 8
  • Veteran: 441 – 463
    • Whelpling’s Dreaming Crests up to rank 4
    • Drake’s Dreaming Crests up to rank 8
  • Champion: 454 – 476
    • Drake’s Dreaming Crests up to rank 4
    • Wyrm’s Dreaming Crests up to rank 8
  • Hero: 467 – 483
    • Wyrm’s Dreaming Crests to rank 4
    • Aspect’s Dreaming Crests to rank 6
  • Myth: 480 – 489
    • Aspect’s Dreaming Crests to rank 4

Where to Get Whelpling’s, Drake’s, Wyrm’s, and Aspect’s Dreaming Crests in WoW

The following sources are where you’ll find each of the four types of Crests required for gear upgrades:

  • Whelpling’s Dreaming Crests: Raid Finder Amirdrassil, Mythic+ dungeons level 2 through 5, World Quests in the Emerald Dream
  • Drake’s Dreaming Crests: Normal Difficulty Amirdrassil, Mythic+ dungeons level 6 through 10, Elite quests
  • Wyrm’s Dreaming Crests: Heroic Difficulty Amirdrassil, Mythic+ dungeons level 11 through 15
  • Aspect’s Dreaming Crests: Mythic Difficulty Amirdrassil, Mythic+ dungeons level 16 and up

Where to Upgrade Gear in WoW Season 3

There are two easy-to-find upgrade vendors you can use to beef up your gear:

Cuzolth in the Central Encampment, in the Emerald Dream [49.8, 63]

Corxian in Valdrakken [45, 38]

So upgrading gear is.. a lot. It’s a bit hard to wrap your head around all the currencies, levels, ranks, etcetera. But it makes sense – in Season 1 of Dragonflight everyone was running around doing +2 Mythic+ dungeons to farm up the single currency and using that to gear up all the way to Mythic Raid levels of endgame gear. It wasn’t a very thoughtful approach to funneling players into endgame content, so these new systems are a bit more robust (and complicated) to facilitate that.
