Where to Find the Aether Compass in FFXIV: Dawntrail

These currents aren't going to find themselves!

The Aether Compass is a key item in Final Fantasy XIV, and its location was moved around in the last major expansion, Endwalker. Players returning to FFXIV: Dawntrail might need a reminder of where the Aether Compass can be found, and assigned to the hotbar. Don’t worry, it’s not actually missing from your inventory.

To access the Ather Compass, click on the exclamation icon at the bottom right of your HUD to access the Duty Menu. Here, select Collection, and you’ll see the Aether Compass along with other useful items.

Like other key items, this can be added to your hotbar for easier access. If you had discarded the item previously, it will show up in the collection again, so there’s no real way to lose it.

What Does the Ather Compass do in FFXIV: Dawntrail?

The Ather Compass is used to locate Aether Currents which unlock flying in various zones. To use it, simply click on it after it has been added to your hotbar. Upon using it, you’ll see a message on-screen that will give you a general direction of the closest Aether Current on the map.

After you have found all the Aether Currents on the map, the compass will give you a message that there aren’t any currents to be found.

Riding these currents using a mount is an essential part of traversal, and makes navigation way easier. Keep in mind though, not all currents can be found using the compass. Some of these have to be obtained through side quests.

FFXIV: Dawntrail is another great expansion for the constantly evolving MMORPG, and brings tons of new content including new jobs like the Viper and the Pictomancer.
