What is Fog Gaming exactly from SEGA? Here’s what we know so far about the project the company earlier said would turn the industry on its head. This particular venture is aimed at the arcade scene, more specifically: Japan’s arcade scene.

Famitsu stirred the pot earlier this month saying that there was a “Huge Scoop” regarding SEGA’s plans for gaming and it turns out, that scoop was Fog Gaming. While it’s not a direct take on Cloud Gaming, it isn’t totally out of the wheelhouse. Fog Gaming is a new gaming service specifically for Japanese arcades and this initiative aims to “revolutionize” the arcade industry specifically. While interesting, we don’t know what impact this will necessarily have on the arcade and gaming scenes outside of Japan.

The goal for Fog Gaming is to repurpose arcade games all across Japan. For those that have never been, or simply don’t know, arcade culture is very much alive and thriving in Japan, making this move an interesting one, though one that really only impacts a general area. The arcades will be reporused to be a part of their Cloud system and target their CPU and GPUs to help lower the cost. What that means is that arcade lovers will have a much lower latency derived from a cost-effective solution. This also means that players can enjoy higher quality experiences as well as more income for those running arcade stops.

Tech journalists Zenji Nishikawa teased this big “scoop” earlier this week saying, “My column in next week’s issue of Famitsu is crazy. I got a huge scoop… It’s a world premiere article. And an exclusive. It may not be Nikkei or Weekly Bunshun, but if you want to know if it’s a scoop that big…it totally is! It’s a scoop from a game company that everyone loves. An insane scoop. Last year, Wired got the exclusive story on PlayStation 5, right? Other media didn’t. It’s that level of a scoop. I interviewed a certain company’s executive and technical staff, it’s really revolutionary… really, it’s a revolution.”

Right now, Fog Gaming is still very much in concept phase and isn’t ready to deploy quite yet from recent reports. When it will be ready remains to be seen, as well as the impact it will have on arcade experiences beyond Japan, but we’ll see. For now, it’s a nifty idea. Not sure about turning the industry on its head, but it is interesting.
