What Happens on Your Birthday in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet? – Answered

It's my birthday and I'll cry over a lackluster gift if I want to

Is there any day better than your own birthday? The answer is no, of course not. It’s a day where everyone’s forced to be nice to you and you can eat cake. No day could possibly be better. Even corporations and video games happily celebrate players’ birthdays, usually bombarding you with small gifts or discounts.

So, what happens if you input your birthday (real or fake) into Pokemon Scarlet and Violet?

What Happens on Your Birthday in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet? – Answered

I lied to The Pokemon Company so you don’t have to. By speaking to Nurse Joy at a Pokestop, I was able to input my birthday. I expected, perhaps, a few Pokeballs. Maybe a Rare Candy?

I was a fool to get my hopes up, especially after that pitiful pre-order bundle that offered up a measly pre-order bonus, which was all of 10 Potions, ten Antidotes, and three Revives.

The only thing that occurs is that you’ll get a spray of fireworks across your screen, a cute Pikachu animation, and the electronic banner on top of the Pokecenter that’s usually dominated by ads will instead display a birthday cake.

The banner does include a Drifloon (because balloons) and a Greavard (because of birthday candles), which is pretty cute. And I begrudgingly have to admit that’s a nice touch.

But beyond these cute touches and some well-wishes from Nurse Joy, you get zip. Nada. Zilch. Maybe that’s to keep Trainers from abusing the Nintendo Switch’s time functon, but what a shame.

Still, if you went in with zero expectations (and your real birthday), it’s probably a nice way to mark the day. Though a happy-birthday style tune change would have been a nice (and free) way to celebrate your birthday too.

Welp, Happy Birthday Trainer!
