There are a lot of items and enchantments that players can toy around with in Minecraft to make their items even better. One of these in particular is the Riptide enchantment which can be added to a Trident. In this guide, we are going to take a look at what the Riptide enchantment does and explain how to use it with a Trident.
What Does Riptide Do in Minecraft?
When players enchant their Trident with Riptide in Minecraft, it will allow them to throw it while standing in water or in rain and essentially fast travel with the weapon while it’s in the air. Further, a Riptide enchanted Trident will also help players easily reach high ledges and can deal damage to enemies. That being said, the main appeal to a Riptide enchanted Trident is the ability to quickly and easily travel around in the water and the rain.
A Trident can be enchanted with Riptide three times, with each one allowing players to travel further. Once you have a Trident, you can enchant it by heading to an Enchanting Table and placing your Trident and three Lapis Lazuli items in the table. You’ll see three options pop up and with some luck, you’ll get the Riptide enchantment right off the bat, but if not, keep trying and you should eventually get it. There are a total of five Trident enchantments, so odds are you’re bound to get it sooner or later. There are some other ways to enchant items as well, but this seems to be the easiest method.

If you’re interested, in the list below we’ve detailed all of the enchantments available for the Trident in Minecraft:
- Riptide – Allows players to travel with their Trident when thrown in water/rain
- Loyalty – Trident returns to the player when thrown
- Unbreaking – Increases Trident durability
- Channeling – Summons a bolt of lighting at a mob when the Trident is thrown at them
- Impaling – Trident does more attack damage against sea creatures
As you can see, there are a couple of different options here for players that want to get fancy with their Trident. Further, now that you know what the Riptide enchantment does in Minecraft compared to the others, you can decide which one you want to use, if any. Additionally, if you don’t have a Trident yet, they cannot be crafted, and are only dropped from Drowned enemies, the underwater zombie looking things. So if you’re in need of one, that should get you started.
