Channel your inner fire lord

When thinking about popular enchantments in Minecraft, you might imagine ones like protection, mending, and sharpness for your armor and weapons. Similarly, if we think about the most commonly used weapons, the ones that come to mind are the sword and bow. There are some lesser-known weapons and enchantments out there, though, with channeling as one of many examples. So, what does channeling do in Minecraft? We have the answer for you below.

What Does the Channeling Enchantment Do in Minecraft?

Channeling is a trident-exclusive enchantment that acts like the smite command with some limitations. If you’re fighting an enemy during a storm and throw your trident toward them, you’ll cast a lightning bolt and fire on that spot. Not only is this generally a cool effect, but it affects different mobs in various ways:

  • Creepers turn into charged creepers, making their explosions more powerful
  • Pigs turn into zombie piglins
  • Villagers turn into witches

Be careful where you throw the trident. If you’re in the middle of a bunch of trees, you can quickly start a massive, uncontrollable forest fire. You do need open air above the mob, though, so this won’t work if they’re directly under a tree, underground, or swimming underwater.

You can get channeling on your trident using enchanting tables or enchanted books. Alongside this, you can also get enchantments like loyalty, unbreaking, and impaling. However, you can’t have channeling and riptide on the same trident, so be sure to keep that in mind when figuring out what enchantments to use!
