During your time in Cozumel in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the very first challenge you will encounter is the Whistle in the Dark challenge, which tasks you with knocking down a series of Death Whistle carvings. The challenge is pretty simple, but can be easily missed if you aren’t paying attention to your surroundings. This guide will explain where to find each Death Whistle carving so that you can complete the Whistle in the Dark challenge on your first run in Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
All Death Whistle Locations
All five of the Death Whistle carvings are found hanging throughout the pyramid ruins in the first chapter of the game. The carvings are a sort of turquoise color, and they are typically hanging by a rope high up.
Death Whistle Carving #1
The first Death Whistle carving is found during the Hunter’s Moon objective. Shortly after you enter the ruins and finish the rope-pulling tutorial, you’ll scramble under a trap and enter a small passage containing the first Death Whistle. Shoot it down with your arrow to activate the Whistle in the Dark challenge.
Death Whistle Carving #2
Just after you crawl through and emerge from the rat-infested tunnel, you will enter a larger room with water in the middle. From the tunnel, look up and slightly to the right to spot the second Death Whistle carving in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Shoot it down and proceed through the passage to the next area.
Death Whistle Carving #3
The third Death Whistle carving is found just after the part where Lara nearly drowns in the underwater cavern. After Lara emerges from the water and catches her breath, turn around and look for a Death Whistle carving handing above the water, slightly to the left. There is also a door here that is not accessible until after you obtain a Reinforced Knife and unlock fast travel. This is where you would need to travel to if you missed any of the carvings.
Death Whistle Carving #4
The fourth Death Whistle is found shortly after you solve the first section of the Hunter’s Moon cart puzzle when trying to reach the top of the pyramid. After you push the cart through the opening and cause a new bell pendulum to raise, continue across the new bells and jump to reach the upper ledge. Before tethering the rope bridge, turn around and look up to the right to find the fourth hanging Death Whistle carving.
Death Whistle Carving #5
The final Death Whistle is found in the second cart puzzle, the one that involves using a crank to push a cart through debris. The Death Whistle carving is suspended up above the area in the beam of sunlight. Shoot it down with your bow and arrow to collect the fifth carving and complete the Whistle in the Dark challenge.
