Shadow of the Tomb Raider wouldn’t quite be what it is without a series of tombs to raid. One of the first tombs you’ll encounter in the game is the Underworld Gate Challenge Tomb, which you will come across near the Jungle Ruins Base Camp during the Rough Landing story mission. We’ll show you how to get through the Underworld Gate Challenge Tomb in Shadow of the Tomb Raider so that you can collect its treasure and be on your way.
Underworld Gate Challenge Tomb Walkthrough
The first half of the Underworld Gate Challenge Tomb involves basic traversal mechanics, such as climbing, jumping, and rappelling. After you crawl through the narrow passage, scramble beneath the spear trap and climb up the grey tree ahead. Remember to activate your Survival Instinct if you ever need a clue as to where to go next.
Leap across the trees to reach the climbing wall and drop down to the path on the other side. Watch out for the floor trap ahead. Search the Explorer Backpack on the left before climbing up the branch and leaping across the next set of trees. Rappel down the wall and swing to reach the ledge below.
Thoroughly search the campsite, making sure to grab the explorer’s journal on the table. When you’re done, scramble up the nearby climbing wall and make your way along the ledges to reach the Canyon Ruins Base Camp on the other side. Be sure to ignite the campfire to establish your Base Camp for future fast travel.
Squeeze through the narrow crack in the wall beside the campfire and enter the temple ruins. Climb up the wall to the right of the stairs to discover a massive cenote chasm. When you’re finished taking in the sights, head to the right and jump off the wooden poles to reach the climbing wall. Rappel down onto the dirt path below.
After looting the small passage, climb up the grey tree and grapple-swing across to reach another dirt path lined with spike defenses. Loot the area, then carefully cross the log bridge to the next area.
Find a Way Across the Cenote
In the next area, you’ll have to find a way to make it across the cenote. Luckily there is only one puzzle in the Underworld Gate Challenge Tomb, and here’s what you need to do to solve it.
- Start by pushing and rotating the rope-covered contraption clockwise.
- Tether a rope bridge that connects the contraption to a rope-covered beam across the way. Climb across the rope bridge to reach the other side.
- Pull the big lever to cause a hanging box attached to a crane to swing across the chasm. Jump across the box to return to the previous platform.
- Cut the rope bridge you made earlier, then rotate the contraption again, counter-clockwise this time.
- Tether a rope arrow from the hanging box to the rotating contraption to hold the box in place.
- Jump back across the box to the area with the lever. Move the lever again, then quickly run back onto the box. Ride the hanging box and jump off at the other side.
Now you’re in the home stretch. Continue along the path, looting the area for any Monoliths or resources. Leap across the gap and grab the wall. As you climb across the rough patches to the right, be prepared to avoid various rocks that come tumbling down upon you.
When you reach the top, be sure to rope-pull the two blocked passages on each side of the sacrifice staircase to collect the treasure housed inside. Interact with the stone stela near the edge of the cliff to unlock access to the Eagle’s Perch skill and obtain a free Skill Point.
That’s it! Once you’ve collected the Eagle’s Perch reward, simply make your way along the path ahead to return to the entrance of the Underworld Gate Challenge Tomb where you started. For more puzzle guides and tutorials, visit our Shadow of the Tomb Raider Guide Hub.
