A new feature has been rolled out in Pokemon GO, as developer Niantic kicks off the Autumn 2020 season in the game. Unfortunately, while it’s a fascinating new feature that adds to the wispy story presence in Pokemon GO, it has proven to be controversial with the fanbase. This new feature, Strange Eggs, has rolled out to fit the spooky Halloween season and give players a new way to get new Pokemon. But the controversy lies in what is needed to hatch these Strange Eggs.
Pokemon GO Strange Eggs Guide and Controversy
Strange Eggs are a new type of egg that, in the game’s fiction, are being gathered and harvested by Team GO Rocket. This seems to be some kind of sketchy, engineered egg type that only hatches Pokemon that are Dark or Poison-types, or Pokemon that evolve into one of those types. The main Pokemon that are hatching from Strange Eggs are Larvitar, Scraggy, Trubbish, and Vullaby. Niantic hints that more may be included or on the way.
In order to get a Strange Egg, you’ll have to battle one of the Team GO Rocket leaders. While this event introducing the Strange Eggs will end on October 19, 2020, the Strange Eggs themselves are a permanent new feature. Each of these eggs requires a static 12km of player travel to hatch, although during the event the distance is cut down to a quarter. And to learn more about Strange Eggs, a new Team GO Rocket Special Research is out as well. On top of all that, the event-exclusive Shadow Mewtwo will now appear after battles with Giovanni.
So what’s the problem, exactly? All of this sounds pretty good, so why would the fans be upset? Well, 12km to hatch an egg is pretty significant. That’s a distance you have to walk in order to hatch the egg, total. And considering the pandemic situation, many Pokemon GO fans still don’t feel comfortable venturing far from home. Niantic is already no longer offering the covid-friendly bonuses, so once this event dies down the Strange Eggs will be much more difficult to hatch.
That, of course, is the perspective from the fans who are upset about this. This event has only just kicked off, and for now it only takes 3km to hatch a Strange Egg. But since these are permanent new Eggs, we may see a response from Niantic in the future. Keep an eye on this space for further updates, but for now this is what the situation is.
