This guide will go over Giovanni’s team and counters to it during the Pokemon GO Tour: Sinnoh.
Pokemon GO Tour: Sinnoh – Giovanni’s Team
You’ll get to battle with Giovanni after you complete the fourth set of GO Tour 2024: It’s about Time (and Space) Special Research missions. When you do, Giovanni’s team will consist of the following Shadow Pokemon:

Giovanni’s second Shadow Pokemon will change based on which Sinnoh starter Pokemon you chose at the beginning of the GO Tour Special Research.
After you defeat Giovanni, you can encounter and try to capture Shadow Regigigas, which has a chance to be shiny.
Shadow Persian Counters
As a pure Normal type, Persian is countered by Fighting type Pokemon. Some legendary Pokemon that can counter Persian include:
- Terrakion,
- Pheromosa,
- Keldeo (Resolute or Ordinary).
Common Fighting type Pokemon can also hold their own against Persian, including:
- Lucario,
- Conkeldurr,
- Breloom,
- Machamp.
Shadow Torterra Counters
Torterra is both Grass and Ground type, making it doubly weak to Ice-type attacks. You have plenty of options for countering Torterra, such as:
- Galarian Darmanitan (Zen or Standard),
- Mamoswine,
- Weavile,
- Glaceon,
- Jynx.
Shadow Infernape Counters
The Fire and Fighting type Infernape doesn’t have a double weakness like Torterra, but it does have plenty of types it’s normally weak to, giving you plenty of options to counter it. Psychic is an especially effective type for dealing with Shadow Infernape. Some powerful Psychic-type legendaries that do well against Infernape include:
- Hoopa (Unbound or Confined),
- Mewtwo,
- Deoxys (Attack Forme),
- or even Azelf from the GO Tour: Sinnoh Timed Research missions.
Alakazam and Espeon are two strong non-legendary Psychic type Pokemon that can also be used to counter Shadow Infernape.
Shadow Empoleon Counters
Empoleon has a good defensive typing in Water and Steel, but can still be countered with powerful Electric or Fighting type Pokemon. Some of the best Pokemon that counter Shadow Empoleon include:
- Xurkitree,
- Terrakion,
- Zekrom,
- Pheromosa,
- Lucario.
Terrakion, Pheromosa, and Lucario are especially good options that can also be used to counter Giovanni’s Shadow Persian, but be careful of Terrakion’s Water type weakness.
Shadow Regigigas Counters
Regigigas is another pure Normal type Pokemon, meaning it has the same Fighting type counters as Shadow Persian. Terrakion, Lucario, and Conkeldurr are especially good choices thanks to their bulk, helping them tank Regigigas’s attacks. Pheromosa is very much a glass cannon, so it might not be able to handle fighting both Persian and Regigigas.
Make sure you don’t leave anything unfinished as you clear up the Pokemon GO Tour: Sinnoh festivities, including catching a White-Stripe Basculin and making use of Origin Forme Palkia and Dialga’s Adventure Effects.
