It’s always fun to use a custom name in role-playing games, and Persona 5 is no different. However, despite the fact that you can change the name, in many past Persona games the main character (sometimes referred to as the Persona 5 MC) has had an official name in the manga or other various spin-offs. Persona 5 is no different with the main character (MC) name mentioned in the manga. If you wish to sign your name with a Japanese name in the Persona 5 name entry, you can opt for the character name used in the manga, Akira Kurusu.
Before you sign your name toward the beginning of the game, securing your character name, keep in mind that the main character in Persona 4 had a different name in the manga than he had in the games. There’s a chance Akira (given name) Kurusu (family name) could be called something different down the road, but for now that is his official name.
Of course you can always opt to use whatever first and last name you’d like. There’s nothing binding players to use what we assume is the official name of the main character. You can decide on a random Japanese name (since it takes place in Japan), or whatever custom name you want to go with. It won’t have a direct impact on the game as all of the voice work avoids using the actual name of the main character no matter what you decide to call him.
There are a few times when the main character is referred to as “Joker” but even if you go with that name, you’ll have to come up with a first or last name to go along with that. There’s a lot of thought that goes into deciding a name in Persona 5 or any RPG, but we’re confident you can come up with something that works well for you.
