Modern Warfare: How to Unlock R9-0 Dragon’s Breath Rounds

After the latest round of weapon adjustments included a nerf to some of the more popular guns in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone, a new king has risen. Weapon adjustments will never truly balance a competitive game, as nerfs inherently lead to something else rising to the top. In this case, the player base has discovered a new contender for the next nerf, and it happens to have a pretty dope name to boot. Turns out an attachment called “Dragon’s Breath” is pretty potent; who knew?

How to Unlock R9-0 Dragon’s Breath Rounds in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

It seems like the Dragon’s Breath rounds showed up alongside Season 5’s original launch date, but largely went unnoticed by players more focused on other weapons. The R9-0 shotgun wasn’t exactly a popular choice, and apparently Dragon’s Breath wasn’t even mentioned in the patch notes. But eventually Dragon’s Breath was discovered, both in its existence and lethality.

Dragon’s Breath is pretty self-explanatory. It’s an ammo mod that adds fire properties to the R9-0’s shells, adding a burning effect on top of the regular shotgun shell damage. This does more damage over time, so even if you don’t finish an encounter with an opponent and they get away, it won’t be long before they’re finished off by military-grade halitosis. If you want to get your hands on it, there are two ways to do so. You can either purchase the Blueprint in the in-game shop, or you can complete a challenge that will unlock it for free. This challenge is to kill 10 opponents while sliding, which sounds like a pain! Luckily it’s one of those challenges you can knock out in less matches if you can pull it off, so you don’t have to leave a match after you manage to get one to chase the next. If you pick a smaller map based on close-quarters combat, you can get through it pretty fast. Of course, if you’re a free Warzone-only player, good luck!

Call of Duty pros and content creators are well aware of what’s going on here, and are complaining accordingly on platforms like YouTube. So it likely won’t be very long before we see a note in the patch notes for an upcoming update about making Dragon’s Breath a bit less overpowered. Of course, the next Call of Duty release is on the way, so perhaps Dragon’s Breath has a chance to slide by unnoticed in the new game chaos.
