Photo mode has more or less become a standard thing in most new AAA games, even many first-party Nintendo Switch exclusives have this creative mode where you can take in-game photos by adjusting the camera and effects. Similar to Breath of the Wild, the standard photo mode does not exist in the game, but there is a Camera that you can use in a similar way. In the previous game, the Camera was one of the Rune abilities, and in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom you will get the camera from Robbie when you first descend into the Depths during the “Camera Work in the Depths” quest. It’s one of the initial quests you’ll get very early on during your first visit to Lookout Landing, right after you land on the surface world for the first time.

Following this quest, you will descend into the unknown underworld – the Depths, a third layer of the massive Tears of the Kingdom map. In this dark world, Robbie will enable your Purah Pad to use the Camera that will be added to the right-hand ability wheel (you call it up with the L button and select with the right analog stick).

How to Use the Camera in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

When you take out the Camera, you can move the field of view with the right analog stick or motion controls if you play in portable mode, and use zoom with the D-pad’s up and down buttons or turn the camera for “self-portrait”. This is not a classic selfie camera, but you will be able to frame Link and adjust his gestures with the L analog stick. You can save the taken photos in the Album, but there are no options for additional effects and camera settings – too bad.

Although there is no real Photo Mode in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, you can still have a lot of fun with the Camera. Basically, everything you take pictures of – characters, objects, equipment, opponents, will be added to the Hyrule Compendium – a really big collect-a-thon only for the most persistent Zelda players out there.
