Yes, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a direct sequel to Breath of the Wild, which released back in 2017. From its announcement, it was stated that it is a direct sequel. You can see the announcement trailer below.

While Breath of The Wild did not have a huge sprawling story and focused more on the exploration and experiencing everything at your own pace, there is a connected narrative.

The Calamity overtook Breath of the Wild’s Hyrule, and it seems that Tears of The Kingdom will follow suit with this concept. How did we get back to this point still remains a mystery and one that fans are excited to find out.
