By the end of the month yet another new Square Enix JRPG will be out on the shelves, and this time it’s a bigger deal than most. Octopath Traveler II is the follow-up to one of the Final Fantasy publisher’s breakout new IP hits. So there are lots of people excited for this one, instead of looking on in bemusement. There will be plenty of newcomers who missed the first game as well, and they may be wondering how much of a “two” this game really is. So I’m here to let y’all know if Octopath Traveler II is connected to the first game or not.

Is Octopath Traveler II Connected to the First Game? – Answered
It isn’t! Not directly, anyway. There will be familiar thematic elements and language used, but these two games are about as disconnected as you can get while remaining within the same IP. The two games are set on completely different worlds, with the first Octopath Traveler being set on a world (or a continent? I didn’t play the first one a ton) called Orsterra. Meanwhile Octopath Traveler II is set on a totally different world called Solistia.
What are the major differences in settings? Orsterra is much more a traditional fantasy setting. The first Octopath Traveler doesn’t get too wild with technology or modern architecture. Meanwhile, things are much more advanced in Octopath Traveler II. While Solistia isn’t exactly a contemporary setting, there are much more complex cities, mechanisms, societal structures, so on and so forth. It’s not exactly a “steampunk” setting, but if you were to map a time period to it, you could argue we’re looking in that vicinity. But yeah, long story short is that if you missed the first game, you won’t be unprepared for the second Octopath Traveler at all.
For what it’s worth, the mobile game Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent is a direct prequel to the first game. So if you’re interested in fully diving into this world and/or series, you might wanna jump on that before the game gets shut down like many of its peers (or maybe it has staying power, who could say?).
