Diablo Immortal had a very rocky development path, with criticism surrounding it from its announcement to beta testing to the unexpected late announcement of the PC version. Now that we know the game will be released on June 2 for mobile and PC, many Diablo fans are contemplating giving it a try – but they’re unsure what type of Diablo Immortal game it will be. Will it demand patience and skill, as in the previous “large” Diablo releases, or will some players be able to get an advantage using the most legendary item of them all – the mighty credit card? In other words – is it a pay-to-win game?
Is Diablo Immortal Pay to Win?
Diablo Immortal will be released as a F2P title (free to play), which means that players will be able to download and play it for free. However, although most PVE content will be available for free to everyone, those who reach the endgame content will still have to do a lot of microtransactions to stay competitive. In-game systems that become necessary in the later part, such as farming legendary games and gem upgrading, are put behind a strict paywall.
When you consider that endgame progression is locked behind mandatory microtransactions, it is evident that Diablo Immortal is a pay-to-win game of sorts.
Also, when it comes to the PVP aspect of the game, where superior gear and builds are vital, it’s clear that all F2P players will be at a disadvantage compared to those who have strengthened their characters via pay-to-win mechanics.
So, is Diablo Immortal Pay to Win? Yes. However, if you just want to play PVE without aspirations to spend a lot of time in the endgame or trying to be a top-ranked Immortal on the server (which is absolutely impossible without a lot of microtransactions), Diablo Immortal can give you many hours of fun. The good thing is that when it comes to F2P the game has no energy systems or daily limitations, so you can finish quests and grind all you want without restrictions – you can even play co-op with friends without having to spend a single cent.
