Very early on in Tears of the Kingdom, while still in the starting zone on the Great Sky Island, the game quickly teaches you how the cold can be fatal to the practically naked Link you start the game with. Many players will mistakenly head for the third Shrine after finishing the first and learn the hard way that this cold zone can be very dangerous. So, let’s find out how to survive snow and cold weather in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
How to Survive the Cold Weather in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
A little bit later in the game, when you gain access to the surface world, the problem of cold is solved very easily by dressing Link in warmer clothes. However, in the beginning, while you are on Great Sky Island, there are no vendors or a way to find warmer gear, so surviving on the way to the third Shrine is a little more complicated. For Link to survive in cold temperatures without quickly running out of health and dying, you must rely on meals that have a warming effect.
These meals are made with ingredients with “warm-sounding” names, for example, Spicy Pepper, which you will find and pick up after completing the second Shrine. You can use the Pot placed on the fire or the Zonai Portable Pot to cook Spicy Peppers and get the Spicy Sautéed Peppers dish which, when consumed, can grant you up to five minutes of cold resistance.

Before you make your way to the third Shrine on Great Sky Island, it might be smart to stock up on those meals and use them once you enter the cold zone (keep an eye on the temperature meter in the lower right part of the screen). Also, having some Wood and Flint with you is not a bad idea to light a fire, which can also temporarily remove the cold effect or help you prepare more warming food.
