One thing you might not pick up on right away is shield surfing and how useful it can be to cover a lot of ground swiftly. Here is how to shield surf in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

How to Shield Surf in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

First up, you’ll obviously need to have a shield equipped in order to perform this feat. Once you’ve chosen a shield, you’ll need to guard with the shield, jump into the air, and hit the parry button (A). This will then make Link do a flip and land on the shield.

From here you will slide along the ground, and if you’re on a slope, you’ll gain a ton of speed.

It’s important to note that this will do a ton of damage to your shield and low-level shields will not be able to shield surf for very long before breaking. So make sure you have some real sturdy shields to surf on.

If you’re in the Gerudo Desert area of the game, use seal surf – you’ll naturally shield surf when attached to one. This is an important mechanic for navigating the harsh desert environment.
