How to Play Fatal Frame Games in Chronological Order

Get your haunted vintage camera ready and let’s dive into the creepy Japanese ghost stories that are not necessarily connected, but on this list, we have arranged them by the year in which they take place in the game:

  1. Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse – Takes place in 1980 – The original release for the Wii console back in 2008, but today you can play the new remaster on just about any current system!
  2. Fatal Frame – Takes place in 1986 – The OG game from the PlayStation 2 and classic Xbox, can’t play it anywhere else today though.
  3. Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly (Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Director’s Cut) – Takes place in 1988 – Also only on PlayStation 2 and Xbox, but there is a remake on Wii called Project Zero 2: Wii Edition.
  4. Fatal Frame III: The Tormented – Takes place in 1988 – This one is only on PlayStation 2.
  5. Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water – Takes place in 2006 – The last game in the series, released in 2015, can be played on all current systems.

There is a spin-off game as well Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir exclusive to Nintendo DS, that chronologically fits possibly somewhere between the last two. Certainly, in whatever order you decide to play the Fatal Frame games, you will have some ghost-photographing good times! Have fun.

FATAL FRAME / PROJECT ZERO: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse is available from March 9 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows PC.
