Blue Grass was introduced in the long-awaited 1.6 update for Stardew Valley, which brought many important changes to the game. This new type of grass made its green cousin completely obsolete, but you still need to put in some effort before growing it from scratch on your farm.
How to Get and Grow Blue Grass in Stardew Valley
Blue Grass can be obtained in two different manners in Stardew Valley: either by starting a new game with a Meadowlands farm or learning the Blue Grass Starter Recipe in a very late game stage. If you’re returning from a long break and feel like starting over, the first method is highly recommended.
When your animals eat Blue Grass instead of the regular green one, they get double the Heart Levels they normally would, making it incredibly effective for making quick progress on your farm. Depending on how far you are in your current save file, it might be worth starting over in the Meadowlands just for that. You can see many patches of Blue Grass spawning through your farm, and they naturally grow as the season changes (they won’t grow in Winter, though).
The other method is to get it by acquiring its recipe directly from Qi’s shop in Ginger Island. This requires repairing the boat in Wily’s Fish Shop, which can only be done after completing the Community Center/Joja Warehouse. This is a very endgame goal, so you won’t be doing this as soon as you boot up a new farm. With all the benefits of the Meadowlands farm, the first method seems more interesting.
If you have a more advanced save file, though, you can head straight to the island and buy the goods from Qi using some Qi Gems you got from completing the shop owner’s challenges. There are lots of useful things in its shop, and the new update just made it even better.
With the Blue Grass Starter Recipe in your hands, you can craft it with some blue-colored items and finally start coloring your whole farm with it from now on. Grass will grow naturally as anything else during growing seasons, so you won’t need to do anything different from just watering it regularly. Your animals will be glad for the new chewy grass they have. Speaking of which, did you know you can have a lot of pets now? And I mean a lot of them, really.
