Once you’ve secured an Eevee, there are two things that you must do in order to evolve it into Umbreon:
- Build a high friendship level with Eevee.
- Evolve Eevee at nighttime.
How to Build High Friendship With Eevee
There are two main ways to increase your friendship level with a Pokemon in Gen 9; by using certain Berries or going on Picnics. If you want to go the Berry route, know that some Berries that boost friendship level also decrease at stat at the same time so that’s something for you to weigh up.
Taking your Eevee on a Picnic is the best way to raise its friendship level. Feed it sandwiches, give it a bath, and play ball with it. Do this multiple times and it should grow close enough to you to move on to the next step. You can also do a combination of both Berries and Picnics if you’d prefer.

With your Eevee at a high friendship level, it’s time to trigger its evolution into Umbreon. To do this, it needs to be nighttime. Also, make sure that your Eevee DOES NOT know a Fairy-type move as it will evolve into Sylveon instead. And if you evolve it during the day, it will become Espeon.

Once it’s nighttime and you’ve checked that your Eevee doesn’t have a Fairy-type move in its moveset, go ahead and level it up by one by either battling and catching wild Pokemon or using Candy. If its friendship level is high enough, it will trigger the evolution into Umbreon.
If the evolution doesn’t happen, go on a couple more Picnics or feed it an applicable Berry or two to raise the friendship more, and then try again.
