How to Get the Mourning Frost in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3)

The Mourning Frost is arguably one of the hardest finds in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3), but the quarterstaff is very much worth it for your magic-wielding characters. Categorized as Very Rare, this particular quarterstaff requires you to collect three different parts. Here’s how to get the Mourning Frost quarterstaff in Baldur’s Gate 3.

What are the Three Parts of the Mourning Frost in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3)?

As mentioned earlier, this quarterstaff can be broken down into the following three items:

• Icy Crystal
• Icy Metal
• Icy Helve

All three items are located in the Underdark and can be unearthed in the first act of the game. However, the three items are separate, which makes the job quite challenging. Additionally, the locations are not stated explicitly in the game, so you’ll have to do a fair bit of exploration. 

How to Find the Icy Crystal in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3)

The first part is arguably the easiest one to find. 

• Head to the Dread Hollow, where you’ll meet Hook Horror. 
• Once you’ve beaten Hook Horror, you’ll come across a tree with huge branches. 
• Rise to the top using the branches, where you’ll encounter more enemies. 
• In the end, you’ll come across Filro The Forgotten. You’ll need to defeat him, and the Icy Crystal can be obtained by looting him. 

How to Find the Icy Metal in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3)

The second part is slightly harder to complete, and the location is part of a side quest handed to you by Sovereign Spawn. 

• Sovereign Spaw orders you to eliminate Duegar intruders.
• Head to the Underdark Beach area, where the intruders are waiting in the southwest. 
• Return to the Spaw after your task is done, and the locked entrance of the vault room will be unlocked. (located near the western exit). 
• Inside the room, you’ll come across a corpse, and the Icy Metal is one of the many valuable items you can find by looting it. 

How to Find the Icy Helve in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3)

The third and final piece requires you to travel toward the Selunite Outpost teleport waypoint. 

• Don’t take the northern exit. Instead, move out using the broken window on the western wall. 
• Follow the path, and you’ll arrive at a zone filled with crystals. 
• There will be a battle, and you can loot the Icy Helve from the body of a drow corpse. 

Once you have the three parts, select one from your inventory. Choose the combine option, which will open a pop-up window from which you can then select the remaining two parts. Once you combine all three parts, the Mourning Frost will be added to your inventory.
