Hay is very important when you’re running a farm in Stardew Valley because, if you’re going to have lots of animals for the year, how else do plan on feeding them? You only have so much time until Winter so you gotta be smart about conserving resources before there comes a time when you won’t be able to stock any more Hay. Here’s how to go about getting Hay in Stardew Valley.
How to Stock and Collect Hay in Stardew Valley
The first step you’ll need is to obtain a Silo. Before you get a Coop or Barn, it’s best to have one of these set up on your farm so you can begin collecting Hay for your animals. A Silo can be bought by going to Robbin’s House between the hours of 9 AM to 5 PM, with the exception of Tuesdays and late afternoon on Fridays. The Silo itself is pretty easy to build, only costing you 100 Gold, but it will need 100 Stone, 10 Clay, and Five Copper Bars. These can be quite costly, but a few runs of the mines should get you plenty if you’re already starting to get animals.
Once you place down a Silo, you will automatically begin to collect Hay whenever you use a Scythe on any type of weeds or grass found on your farm. The Silo can hold up to 240 pieces of Hay and, once you get to that limit, the Hay Icon will stop showing up whenever you are using your Scythe on Weeds or Grass.Â
Here’s a tip for when that happens; after you get a Coop or Barn, but before you go about feeding your animals, you can hold down on the Right Mouse Button or Use Button and you will begin collecting all of the Hay that is in the Silo from the Dispenser in the Coop or Barn. Make sure that you’re either on a tool or empty space, if you have the Hay Held, you’ll only place it back in the Dispenser. You can then take the Hay to the Community Center for Drop off, sell it, or you can save Hay so that when Winter rolls around, you won’t need to worry about going to Marnie’s and buying it for 50 Gold.Â
It gets a bit difficult when you get the Deluxe versions of the Barn and Coop, but as long as you have a basic or even just a Big Barn and Coop, you can use this method to collect Hay until you no longer have to worry about having lots of Hay. After all, you can continue to build Silos just so that you have larger reserves.
