As soon as you step foot in the Loloska region in Monster Hunter Stories 2, you will be slapped in the face with the icy conditions. The snowy expanses of Loloska may be pretty, but they can also be deadly. Frostbite can affect both you and your Monsties in battle, so getting some resistance to protect you from the harsh weather is absolutely essential.
How to Avoid Frostbite in Monster Hunter Stories 2
If you or your Monsties succumb to Frostbite in battle, you will be unable to move and will be forced to skip your turn. To avoid this unfortunate fate, your first stop before exploring the wild areas in Loloska should be to get some cold resistance. You can do this in one of four ways.
Hot Mist
The first and easiest way to protect you and your Monsties from Frostbite is to get your hands on some Hot Mist. Hot Mist is an item you can purchase from the shop in Kuan Village. It will only cost you 100 Zenny, but it doesn’t last forever.
You will have to buy a decent stash of Hot Mist to cover you throughout all of your Loloska explorations if you don’t have any other sort of cold resistance. For that reason, Hot Mist is best used as a temporary fix before you move on to more permanent solutions.
Armor
Each location in Monster Hunter Stories 2 offers its own weapons and armor based on the monsters you will encounter there. Thankfully, many of the Armor pieces in Loloska offer cold resistance. Of course, to craft armor, you have to have encountered and defeated enough of the local monsters to collect their drops, so Hot Mist will still be necessary for your first expedition, at least.
Having cold-res armor covers you from Frostbite, but it doesn’t help your Monsties.
Cold Res Genes
If you want to permanently protect your Monsties from Frostbite, you will have to tinker with their DNA. Monsters that are local to Loloska are born for the icy conditions. That means that many of them have cold resistance hardwired into their genetic code.
Sneak into Monster Dens while you’re exploring in Loloska to steal some eggs. Monsties like Logombi, Zamitros, and Popo often have something called a Warming Gene. Use the Rite of Channeling to transfer Warming Genes to your other Monsties to give them permanent protection from the cold.
Talismans
The last method you can use to get cold resistance is by purchasing Talismans from Melynx Inc. in exchange for Bottle Caps. Melynx Inc. sells all sorts of goodies, from items, weapons, armor, and, of course, Talismans.
These Talismans offer many different kinds of support. Some let you use items without actually consuming them, give you higher evasion, or allow you to recover some HP at the end of your turn. The Breaker (M) & Cold Res Talisman both increase your damage and give you cold resistance, making it a great option for those wanting to avoid Frostbite in MHS2.
