How to Get and Use the Mask of the Shapeshifter in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG)

Going incognito

One of the many, many, many tools available to players in Baldur’s Gate 3 is the ability to find items that provide access to spells. These items even allow characters with no spellcasting abilities to throw out magic like all their fancy wizard friends. One such item is the Mask of the Shapeshifter, which allows players to cast Disguise Self. Let’s find out how to get it.

To get the item, you will need access to the Deluxe Edition of BG3, which contains several items from, or referencing, Divinity Original Sin 2. If you chose to purchase BG3 during its early access period, then you will automatically be upgraded to the Deluxe Edition.

If you didn’t get the game before launch, don’t worry. You can still head to the Steam page and pick it up; however, I’m uncertain if it is worth the cost.

If you have the Deluxe Edition upgrade, the next step is to progress through the game until you get access to the Camp, which happens after you escape the Nautiloid and arrive on the beach. Click the button on the right of your toolbar that looks like a fire, and select Go To Camp.

From the campfire, you will want to head West, to a chest near Shadowheart’s tent (if you’ve allowed her to join you). Open the Traveller’s Chest, and you will find all of the in-game items unlocked through the Deluxe Edition. The number of chests available is equal to the number of Player Characters in your lobby, but only one will contain your items.

Now that you have the Mask go to your Inventory panel by pressing I, and equip the item in the helmet slot to the left of your character.

With your fancy new hat equipped, close the panel and look at the toolbar at the bottom of your screen. In the Common section, you should see a new spell called Shaepshift. Click this, and then click on your character. You will be presented with a panel of potential disguises you can use. Select one and click on your character to confirm the spell.

Congratulations, you now look like someone completely different, with all of the social benefits and negatives that might include. You can cancel the spell at any time by selecting Dispel Disguise from the panel at the bottom of your screen.

With the sheer amount of potential options, there will be situations when the ability to quickly drop your party into stealth is crucial. Thankfully there is a key bind for that, and we have a list of the best keyboard shortcuts available in Baldur’s Gate 3.
