How to Fix The Callisto Protocol Crashing on PlayStation

Maybe the cell wasn't so bad..

The Callisto Protocol, the highly-anticipated survival horror that had Dead Space fans in a rush, finally released for all platforms on December 2, 2022. Though it delivers on its stunning visuals and visceral, bloody combat, it’s been met with less-than-stellar reception as players on every platform experience constant stuttering issues and outright crashes. Even PC players rocking the latest GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards aren’t safe from dropped frames and technical bugs. PlayStation 4 and 5 users also seem to be reporting instances of the game crashing, sometimes repeatedly at the same spots, preventing them from continuing their playthrough. If you’re running into issues like this, keep reading to learn how to fix The Callisto Protocol from crashing on PlayStation platforms.

How to Fix The Callisto Protocol Crashing on PlayStation

Though Striking Distance Studios seems to be aware of the performance issues and have already issued a PC patch, they haven’t been able to remedy all of the game’s bugs just yet. If your game is crashing on your PlayStation console, try the following steps to possibly fix the problem:

Check for System Updates

PlayStation consoles regularly receive system updates, especially as more hardware demanding games are released. Go to your PlayStation’s settings menu and navigate to the System Update section to make sure your system is running the latest version.

Restore an Older Save File

If you’re crashing at the same spot in your game, try reloading to an older auto-save checkpoint. You may need to reload a save from a bit farther back than your most recent, as those saves may already be corrupted.

Rebuild Database (PS5)

To have your PlayStation 5 scan its files and create a new database of its content:

  • Turn off your PS5 console.
  • Hold the power button down for seven seconds until you hear a beep.
  • Connect your PS5 controller via USB and press the PS button to enter Safe Mode.
  • In the Safe Mode options, select Rebuild Database.

Reinstall The Callisto Protocol

If the above options don’t work, your game file may be corrupted beyond repair. Unfortunately, you may just have to uninstall and reinstall the game completely.
