How to Track Scents With Your Chocobo in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Once you’ve got your Chocobo from Bill, the world really starts to open up. No longer are you bound to the tedium of Cloud sprinting down the trail, as Chocobos are so much faster. But as you’re on birdback, there’s a chance that a blue question mark will appear over your Chocpbo’s head. When this happens, treasure is nearby.

To actually locate the treasure, you’ll need to press the ‘Scent’ button, which is the Up key on the D-Pad. But what many people miss is that you’ll need to hold the Up button. Once you hold it long enough, a transparent blue line will extend from your Chocobo toward the treasure.

You just need to follow that line until you reach the end. Once you do, a bright sparkle will indicate where the treasure is. If you lose track of the line, you can always hold the Up button to resummon it.

To unbury the treasure, approach the spot where the line ends and press the Down button on the D-Pad. This will cause your Chocobo to peck at the ground. Doing so will unearth a variety of treasures. You might get rare resources, like Emeralds, Rubies, or even collectible items. I found the PLAY ARTS Rest Spot model next to a windmill behind Bill’s Farm.

And while the model doesn’t serve any significant function, the assortment of items you can find means that it’s always worth the time to let your Chocobo lead you to buried treasure. And if you’re trying to find treasure spots that your Chocobo hasn’t sensed yet, always be on the lookout for rabbits. It’s those adorable creatures that have buried all those treasures.

If you’re in the market for rare resources, Mellow Timber is one you shouldn’t miss out on, as it’s important for those early-game Item Transmutations. And close to the Chocobo Ranch is Jadewind Hill, where you can pick up a few caches of items.
