How to Download and Use Sonic Origins Music Mod

Fix the Sonic 3 music on PC.

We know why you are here – Sonic Origins impressed us with its quality remasters of classic 16bit Sonic games, but that god-awful changed music in Sonic 3 is just unacceptable. Fortunately, at least for those playing the PC version, there is a quick and permanent solution to this problem. Check out the guide below for an explanation on how to change the music in Sonic Origins with mods, and specifically how to put the original music back into some of the Sonic 3 levels.

How to Download and Use Sonic Origins Music Mod

Follow the steps below to fix the music in Sonic Origins:

  1. Download GameBanana’s “The Definitive Sonic 3 OST” from here. Look for the “thedefinitivesonic3ost.zip” and “thedefinitivesonic3ost_alt.zip” for some additional tracks.
  2. Unzip the archives you downloaded, and copy the two files named Music03_3SK.acb and Music03_S3K.awb.”
  3. Now, go to your Sonic Origins folder located in steamapps/common. once you are in the Sonic Origins folder, navigate to x64/raw/sound.
  4. Paste and click yes on overwrite for the Music03_3SK.acb and Music03_S3K.awb files in the sound folder.

After this, start the game and you should see the following changes to the soundtrack:

  • Original Invincibility Theme is back from the regular version of Sonic 3.
  • Knuckles’ Theme by Michael Jackson’s team.
  • Carnival Night Zone by Michael Jackson’s team.
  • Ice Cap Zone by Michael Jackson’s team.
  • Launch Base Zone by Michael Jackson’s team.
  • Launch Base Act 2 Complete original from the regular version of Sonic 3.
  • Doomsday Zone Complete original from the regular version of Sonic & Knuckles.
  • As a bonus there is a remix version of the new Sonic Origin’s Super Sonic theme that sounds much better.

And that’s how to change the music in Sonic Origins – but only for the PC version. Unfortunately, players on PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch will – at least for now – be stuck with the changed tracks in Sonic 3. The hope remains that this will be fixed with some upcoming patch or potential Plus version down the road.
