Like any good Resident Evil game, Resident Evil 4 Remake features a wide array of bosses that you’ll need to kill to progress the story. These bosses range from fairly simple, all the way to complex and require some exploiting mechanics to your advantage. The first major boss in the game can be somewhat difficult but should be easier once you know some of the mechanics. Here’s how to defeat Chief Mendez in Resident Evil 4 Remake.

The boss fight is the first of many across the full experience, starting with Mendez turning into his Las Plagas form. As a side note, Mendez looks disgusting with his elongated spine and new limbs growing from his back. For the fight itself, Mendez starts the fight by simply walking toward Leon and doing some light swings. For this phase, you’ll want to simply throw shots into Mendez and use your dodge to avoid him as his attacks wind up. You’ll be required to stab him in his weak spot a few times when he goes down, so keep an eye out for him to seem exhausted.

Do that a few times, and you’ll progress to phase two where Mendez will become a spider creature of sorts. For this phase, he’ll begin to swing from beams on top of the farmhouse. While it’s not necessary, we suggest going to the upper floor for this one since it’ll give you a better angle on Mendez. During this phase, Mendez’s main attack will be to throw large, burning pieces of wood at Leon. When he grabs them from the floor of the farmhouse, you should try to run from one side of the room to the other to avoid being hit. He’ll also pull out explosive barrels, which you should shoot before he throws for some free damage.

Other than throwing items, Mendez’s other attack is to quickly charge forward. When he does this, go to another part of the room quickly to avoid the attack. Otherwise, it’s as simple as continuing to throw shots into Mendez to deal damage to him. After dealing enough damage to him, he’ll eventually fall and you’ll have finished the boss fight. Before you leave the barn, be sure to grab the fake eye off Mendez’s body. You can find out what to do with it with our guide.
