How to Correctly Plant Pumpkin Seeds in Minecraft (2023)

Planting the seeds of knowledge in your brain.

One of the more peaceful parts of Minecraft is farming, which is something you’ll likely need to do at some point. If you want to have an adequate supply of food, you’ll need to farm some animals or crops until you have an ample supply of things like Bread or Steak. One such crop doesn’t have a lot of uses for survival but can have its uses regardless. Here’s how to correctly plant Pumpkin Seeds in Minecraft.

How Do You Plant Pumpkin Seeds in Minecraft?

Before you consider anything, the first thing you want to do is ensure your Pumpkin farming spot is well-lit. Pumpkin Seeds need at least a light level of 10 to grow and produce Pumpkins, so slapping some torches nearby should help. Once you have that, ensure you have some farmland with water. Farmland can be created by using a Hoe on some dirt or grass. Once you have all that in place, plant your Pumpkin Seeds and either wait for them to grow fully or use Bonemeal to fast-track the process.

Once you have a fully-grown Pumpkin stem, you still have a few things to consider. Pumpkin Seeds will create a Pumpkin on an adjacent block, though only if that adjacent block is one of the following:

  • Dirt
  • Coarse Dirt
  • Rooted Dirt
  • Grass Block
  • Farmland
  • Podzol
  • Mycellium
  • Moss Block
  • Mud
  • Muddy Mangrove Root

If none of the adjacent blocks are these blocks, the Pumpkin won’t grow. That’s not as much of a restriction as you might think, as that allows you to control the spots where Pumpkins will grow. This can be especially useful if you plan to line these up side by side. That’s not even mentioning the potential for an automatic farm, as pistons can break Pumpkins when pushing them.
