How to Catch Mewtwo

At the moment, Mewtwo is not available outside of the recent Japanese event. However, once the popular Pokemon is made available to the rest of the world, in order to catch Mewtwo in Pokemon Go, you will need to first have access to exclusive raids. We don’t know exactly when Niantic will unleash these exclusive raids on the rest of the world, but we know it’s coming very soon. Be sure to find out how to get into exclusive raids so you’re ready when Mewtwo becomes available.

Just like any other raid boss, you will need to know the best Pokemon to use against Mewtwo if you want to bring him down. With a raid boss CP of 49,430 it won’t be an easy task, but if you follow the counters listed here you will increase your chances of defeating and catching Mewtwo. As a Psychic Pokemon type, Mewtwo takes extra damage from Dark, Bug and Ghost type Pokemon. Therefore, your best bet is to use Gengar, Scizor, Tyranitar, Houndoom, Pinsir or Gyarados.

At the end of the raid, the raid boss Pokemon must be captured. While the Japanese event had a 100 percent capture rate, that won’t be the case once the exclusive raids go live for the rest of the world. We don’t yet know the exact capture rate, but when Articuno was first introduced it had a capture rate of around two percent. That means there are going to be a lot of failures when attempting to catch Mewtwo. However, you can increase your chances by having Golden Razz Berries on hand, so make sure you’re stocked up before heading into the raid.

Once you have Mewtwo captured, you won’t be able to use it to defend a Gym, but you can use it to attack Gyms. In addition, the Buddy Distance for Mewtwo is 20km for each Candy. Be sure to check out our Pokemon Go game hub for more on Legendary Pokemon.
