How to Back Up Save Data in Valheim – Save File Location

Backing up your save data in Valheim requires minimal knowledge of the Windows file system, and it’s actually very simple. But first, before you go to make that backup, shut down the game! This is very important because if the game is still running minimized, and you try to mess around with its files, you can easily cause data corruption yourself – so close the game completely first before attempting this.

To backup your Valheim Save Data:

  1. Check if you are set to see hidden items in Windows (Control Panel / Folder options, or just look it up by typing “show hidden items” into the Windows search)
  2. Your Valhaim save files are located in C:\Users\Username\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\ (Username being your Windows username, from the account you play Valhaim on)
  3. In this location you will find a few folders: Characters, Worlds and Screenshots if you made any. These are the folders that you want to copy and paste to a safe backup location.

If save data corruption happens to you or you just want to return to the save state at the time you made a backup, simply return these files to their original place overwriting the current ones.
