If you want to plop down structures in perfect alignment, creating a functional and aesthetic settlement, you can rotate buildings by holding down Shift and scrolling the mouse wheel. The rotational direction varies depending on which way you scroll the mouse wheel—up or down. The result is always the same, though.

Furthermore, you can only rotate buildings when the structure is translucent during the planning phase. You cannot place a building, decide you don’t like its positioning, and then edit said structure to alter the rotation. Once you place the building, it’s stuck until it’s destroyed.

In other real-time strategy games of a similar style, you could only ever rotate specific buildings, such as housing and industry plots. But in Age of Mythology: Retold, you can rotate any structure in the game during the planning phase, including guard towers, gates, and unique buildings, like the temples. It all works the same, with the same control scheme.

You’ll primarily rotate buildings for aesthetic purposes, to fit all of your structures into a tight space, or because you have a gap in your defenses that you want to cover. I found myself rotating walls, guard towers, and gates more frequently than anything else. The landscape in Age of Mythology: Retold doesn’t adhere to a grid-like nature, so you have rocks, trees, and pathways jutting out at odd angles. You must work with the environment to better design a base that can withstand assault.

Now that you know how to rotate buildings in Age of Mythology: Retold, teach your fellow players while enjoying the game’s crossplay support!
