How Pokemon Sword and Shield Isle of Armor DLC Scaling Works

A new level scaling system will be introduced to Pokemon Sword and Shield with the Isle of Armor DLC. Here's how it'll work.

The Pokemon Sword and Shield Isle of Armor DLC has finally arrived and will introduce a new scaling system to the game. While this is certainly exciting news and should make the game more enjoyable, it’s going to be important to know how the Isle of Armor scaling system works, so that you can get the most out of the game.

How Does Scaling Work in Pokemon Sword and Shield Isle of Armor

Simply put, the new Pokemon Sword and Shield Isle of Armor DLC scaling system will force players to battle against Pokemon whose difficulty has been scaled relative to that of the player’s party. This means that if you have a strong lineup of Pokemon in the game, you’ll face stronger enemies. On the other hand, if you have a weaker lineup of Pokemon, you’ll face weaker enemies.

More specifically, the Isle of Armor level scaling system will be based on your highest level Pokemon. This means that if you have a Level 50 creature in your party, then you’re going to face enemies scaled to Level 50. This won’t be a problem if you have additional high level Pokemon in your party, but if you’ve only got one Level 50 and the rest are Level 20s, you’re probably going to have a tough time when the DLC releases. At the time of writing, it’s unclear if the new level scaling system will be active across every location in the game, or if it’ll only impact new locations in the DLC.

It’s also likely that the new Pokemon level-scaling feature will be part of the Crown Tundra DLC that’s set to release later this year, so there’s really no running from it. Additionally, players who have made their way through the main story have already experienced some form of level scaling, as once you become a Champion, all Pokemon in the Wild Area will be boosted to at least Level 60. So if you’ve made it pretty far into the game, you shouldn’t have too much trouble, but if you’re a relatively new player, you’ll want to be careful.

In celebration of the Pokemon Sword and Shield Isle of Armor DLC, the Pokemon Company has announced a Pokemon Presents livestream for June 17. At the time of writing, it’s unclear what will be announced during the event, but we do know that it will last around 11 minutes. So be sure to check out our homepage for updates on the stream.
